Welcome to COAST
We are a community organisation working for the protection and restoration of the marine environment around Arran and the Clyde.
We aim to:
• improve the local marine environment for the benefit of everyone
• help sustain the livelihood of those dependent on fishing and tourism
• increase the popularity of the area as a diving site and tourist destination
• educate future generations on the need for marine conservation.
COAST is recognised worldwide as one the UK’s leading community marine conservation organisations. We were responsible for the establishment of Scotland’s first No Take Zone in Lamlash Bay.
We are now campaigning for effective management of the designated South Arran Marine Protected Area (MPA).
Coastal communities turning the tide - February 2018 Newsletter
Coastal communities turning the tide
As Fiona Gell recently wrote in The Guardian, it is ordinary people who are driving the future of conservation, the government is recognising this, and starting to listen to what coastal communities have to say.
SEPA’s CEO Terry A'Hearn and Aquaculture Specialist Mike Montague accepted our public invitation on social media to visit COAST this month. During a full day of discussion there were many straight questions from members of our community about SEPA's regulatory role and the proposed expansion of Lamlash Bay Salmon Farm. Terry later stated: "Great day with community members. Loved their enthusiasm, knowledge and determination to build a better future for their island. Has improved my understanding of community views re fish farming. A great day!". He was clear to all present that the salmon aquaculture industry needs to improve, that compliance is non-negotiable, and that SEPA expects to be held to account as an effective regulator.

Scottish Salmon Company strikes again - October 2017 Newsletter
Company shows utter contempt for the people and nature of Arran
After strategically withdrawing the 2015 application for an expansion of 60% in production just before a public hearing was due, the Scottish Salmon Company (SSC) now intend to double the production of their "battery salmon factory" in the waters of Arran's Marine Protected Area (MPA). Despite vehement opposition by our island community to any expansion, the SSC have also publicly stated their interest in further new salmon farm developments in the 'wider Arran area'.
