Marine Harvest's appeal to start a new fish farm at Clauchlands despite the failure of their planning application has been turned down. It is now certain that their proposal to establish a larger fish farm near the Outdoor Centre in Lamlash will not go ahead.
All those who worked so hard in the campaign to ensure that Lamlash Bay and the No Take Zone will not run the risk of massive pollution are justifiably jubilant. Don MacNeish of COAST said it was an extraordinary triumph of public opinion over the weight of multinational interests, and quoted the wise saying, 'In nature there are neither rewards nor punishments; there are consequences' (Robert Green Ingersoll).
Kenneth Gibson MSP e-mailed to say, 'I'm absolutely delighted that the Reporter has recommended refusal of the proposed Clauchlands fish farm. I now expect the Crown Estates to accept this recommendation. This site was never suitable and the establishment of the No Take Zone made it all the more important that the appeal was refused. COAST have done a magnificent job in securing this outcome.
