Dredger ban for South Arran Marine Protected Area and other west coast MPAs: COAST congratulates Richard Lochhead on listening to coastal communities, marine scientists and economists.

In a broadly welcome statement Richard Lochhead, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment, announced yesterday that a Marine Conservation Order (MCO) will be put before parliament this week setting out conservation measures including banning the highly destructive practice of scallop dredging within the South Arran Marine Protected Area and other west coast MPAs. COAST has campaigned hard to end this damaging activity in Arran’s MPA which was designated in 2014 and we congratulate the Minister on listening to coastal communities, marine scientists and economists on this issue.

Mr Happy even happier!

COAST congratulates our tireless and normally not too grumpy Chair, Howard Wood on his OBE. Howard was awarded the Goldman Prize for Europe in April earning him a spot in the Independent’s ‘Happy’ list. We are absolutely delighted to learn that he has now been honoured with an OBE for his dedicated work through COAST to community-based marine conservation and restoration.

Howard says " I am delighted to receive this honour from the Queen. It recognises the work done by everyone involved in COAST and would not have been possible without the widespread community support both on Arran and farther afield."

Howard also told COAST he intends to remain a thorn in the side of the marine establishment until our inshore waters receive adequate protection.

We sent COAST ambassador Dr Leigh Howarth to this year’s IPW in Ireland, to present his research on the Lamlash Bay No-Take Zone, and to learn how other countries are managing their scallop fisheries in a changing world.
